The National Honors Society (also known as NHS) is a highly esteemed club across many high schools that recognize students for their accomplishments such as academic achievements, leadership skills, and volunteering hours. The Greenway NHS program is sponsored by Mr. Jarrell, with the help of officers Justin Le, Diana De Las Cuevas Fadon, Michael Ochieng, and Anthony Phan.
Many people may be wondering now how to be a part of this club; well, it just comes with a few simple requirements.
“If you’re a junior or senior interested in NHS, all you need to do is maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher and have good behavior,” Senior Michael Ochieng said.
To stay in the prestigious NHS, students need to make sure that they are fulfilling volunteer hours.
“I joined NHS because I wanted to be involved in the community, and I thought this was a good first step to do that,” Senior Justin Le, Co-President of NHS, said.
“That was also a big part of why I joined, and I wanted to give back to my community,” Senior Diana De las Cuevas Fadon, Co-President of NHS, said.
“I like helping people and my community, and NHS is a good way to do acts of service,” Senior Michael Ochieng, secretary, said.
“I joined NHS because not only did I want to help out the community, but it was also a good opportunity to gain scholarships and benefits.” Senior Anthony Phan, treasurer, said. All four of these members have done exceedingly well in order to get where they are today, and are very excited to welcome new members this year. Joining the Greenway NHS club on campus can lead to you making new friends, receiving benefits, and helping the community.
In addition to being a great way to make friends and help out the community, this club will look good on college and job applications, as well as possibly lead to an academic scholarship.
The officers and Mr. Jarrell work very hard to be able to give out information and updates of opportunities to help out the community. There are club meetings about once a month (typically the third Wednesday of every month). At these meetings, the officers and club sponsor will let the other NHS members be aware of any events coming up. There will also be a notice of when and where these meetings will occur for all members (By google classroom and the Parent Square app).
In conclusion, The National Honors Society (NHS) is a community service based club that prepares students for college, encourages them to engage with their community, gives the individuals in this club leadership skills, a strive for excellence, and life-long friendships. If you are still unsure if NHS is the right for you, you can reach out to Mr. Jarrell or one of the officers.
