To say that Ms. Fowler is important to Greenway would be a massive understatement. Not only does she teach english, she’s in charge of Ed Professions, and she coaches girl’s basketball and tennis. In December of 2023 Ms. Fowler received life altering news: she had been diagnosed with colon cancer. This was devastating for the to those who knew her. Fortunately, Ms. Fowler is cancer free as of September 2024, and she has decided to share her journey!
Interviewer: How long was your battle?
Fowler: I was diagnosed in early December of 2023. I was just now told that I’m cancer free. So about 9 months. But I will have to continue to get MRI, CT scans, and have colonoscopies every 3 months for the next 3 years.
I: What was the most challenging part of your journey?
F: After radiation was done, I got really sick. I had inflammation of my intestines which made me not be able to eat or drink much. I lost 30 pounds in about 2 weeks and was very dehydrated. I was out of school for a month. I finally got better and was able to return to school for the last couple months. Another challenge I had is that chemo would irritate my already inflamed intestines, so I ended up in the hospital 3 times during the summer. We actually stopped chemo early (I did 5 of my 8 sessions) because of this. I was also not supposed to lose my hair, but I did lose a lot of it which was tough.
I: While going through your treatment, what was your mindset?
F: I’m a positive person anyways so for the most part; I was very positive through it all. I knew I could get through it. When I was stuck at home for extended periods of time, I would start to get down a little bit, but then I would feel better enough to get out of the house a little and my positive attitude would come back.
I: What was your greatest motivation?
F: My family and friends are always my greatest motivation. I also had many events planned that I wanted to feel good enough to attend during this process; things such as my son’s college graduation, Garth Brooks concert in Vegas, Lady Gaga concert in Vegas etc. I also just wanted to be able to drink Dr. Pepper again, travel again and be able to get back to work!
I: Do you have any advice for someone dealing with a similar situation?
F: Hopefully, they have family and friends they can rely on and who can help them. My family was instrumental in my recovery. I never went to treatment, doctor’s appointments or even stayed in the hospital by myself. Let people help you and be there for you. Also, try to stay positive and do as much ‘normal’ stuff as you can so that you don’t spiral into negativity. My doctor even gave me that advise. Positive attitude is very crucial to this journey.
It’s clear to see that Ms. Fowler’s journey was — by no means — an easy one. However, Ms. Fowler’s strength, positive mindset, and support system allowed her to get through it. The Greenway Family is overjoyed to see such persistence: we love you Ms. Fowler!
