When you think about Wednesday, you think about a late start, right? You think school starts at 9 instead of 8, and you’re able to catch up with people. I get coffee and then come to school, but I always wondered what other students do on late starts and if they have to change their morning routine because of it.
“Wednesday mornings, I do two things depending on how I’m feeling. Most of the time, I wake up at the same time as a regular school day and do a cute hairstyle and outfit because it usually takes more time. Any other time I wake up at the time that I leave on a regular day, so I get extra sleep and then come to school in sweatpants or jeans,” Freshman Miea McMillian said.
“The only thing that changes in my routine on Wednesday is that I sleep in a little more, and after that, I get ready and go get coffee or something,” Freshman Charlyse Menendez said.
Late starts can be used for anything; the school mainly made it up for struggling students, but that’s not the case with Honor Roll student Baylee Nichols.
“During my extra hour on Wednesday morning, since I usually sleep in for at least 30 minutes, and then I will go get a coffee or breakfast before I have to go to school,” said Senior Baylee Nichols.
While a lot of students use the time for themselves, some students use it to help their family.
“On Wednesdays, I get up and I make my mom breakfast, so when she gets back home from dropping off my brothers at school, she has something to eat. After that, I take my dog on a walk, and then when I get back, I take a shower and take time for myself before I start to get ready for school. Wednesdays give me extra time to take care of myself without worrying about getting up early, and it’s nice to have a different routine for one day of the week,” Freshman Anya Perdue said.
Wednesday Morning isn’t just for students, it’s also for teachers; their free hour is a bit different, though. Science Teacher Ms Rearick gave us an insight into what a teachers usual routine is on Wednesday Morning and what they do with the extra hour.
“As teachers, we unfortunately do not get an extra hour and instead we have meetings that are scheduled in the morning. These help us collaborate with the other teachers in the school, our subject, and even our specific content. So, although we arrive at work at the same time as normal on Wednesdays, these days are very important for us to become better prepared to teach you guys. The only way these days impacts our normal routine is the fact that we have to account for shorter class periods and alter our lessons to be completed on time.”
As you can see, late start is different to students and teachers in many ways. Whether it’s sleeping in late, going to a coffee shop, or preparing you class for day, late start helps out a lot of students and teachers get ready of the rest of the day to come.
