For juniors and seniors, homecoming isn’t just a week of festivities—it’s a collection of memories tied together by the creative themes that define each year. From Barbie to The Great Gatsby, these upperclassmen have experienced some of the most iconic homecoming themes, each one leaving its mark on their high school journey.
While the themes may come and go, the feelings they stir—excitement, connection, pride—are what make homecoming such a memorable time. For many students, it’s the week when the school feels most alive, decorated head to toe, with spirit roaring through the halls.
“Throughout my years at Greenway, my favorite hoco theme was the Barbie Homecoming that we had last year. I really liked the spirit days we had and how much fun it was,” said junior Zoie Brant.
Themes like “Barbie,” “The Great Gatsby,” and many more have each played a role in shaping homecoming week over the years. Spirit days take on new energy when backed by a strong theme—one that’s fun, easy to participate in, and sparks creativity across all grade levels. Juniors and seniors often help lead the charge, both in planning and setting the tone for involvement.
Last year’s theme, “Barbie,” proved to be one of the most immersive yet. Inspired by pink outfits and lights, the dance venue was transformed into a pink dream. A photo booth, snacks, and the dance floor brought the “big dream” to life.
Behind the scenes, upperclassmen poured their energy into making the week special. From helping design posters and coordinating outfits to staying late decorating the gym, their efforts paid off in a week filled with pride and unity.
“My favorite homecoming theme from all my years here was probably Barbie since it was the most memorable.” Said Ms. Johnson, a staff member.
Even beyond the dances, the themes spilled into daily spirit events. Students came dressed in outfits representing different days leading up to the big day. Hallways buzzed with conversation about whose costumes hit the mark and what parts of the setup were the coolest.
Homecoming days also offered a rare chance for reflection. Seniors cherished their final year of these traditions, while juniors began to realize their time to lead was just around the corner. The themes served not only as a backdrop for celebration but as a reminder of the fleeting nature of high school itself.
The most memorable themes are often the ones that bring people together, not just for one day, but throughout the entire week. They invite students to participate, express themselves, and create lasting memories with classmates they’ve grown up with.
As the lights dimmed and the final song played at the dance, it wasn’t just about the decorations or the music—it was about everything that led up to that moment. The laughter, the planning, the sense of belonging. That’s what makes a theme stick. That’s what makes homecoming unforgettable.
