Great questions about whether AI is useful in education?! It is simple to get easy answers, but is it worth not doing the advanced thinking your brain is capable of? The use of AI definitely takes a toll on students, as it’s so accessible and easy to manipulate. Let’s take a look at some major examples from Ms. Hamby’s opinions on the usage of AI.
Back in the days, it was complicated, but possible to find answers to an assignment since people back then had to do their own research through several ways. Ms. Hamby said that “finding answers was slower since we had no computers to guide our research; we had to go to the library and use the ‘old-fashioned’ methods of books, magazines, or encyclopedias to find information,” defining that kids nowadays have it a little easier than they did back then.
Still, she expects and encourages us to study using our resources instead of relying on AI for answers. It replaces the human touch that makes learning special. While students do prefer doing things online, it is always better to write down on paper, break it down, and review it for better chances of memorization, and it enhances the learning skills of your brain.
Ms. Hamby doesn’t completely hate AI if used correctly! She claims to “believe that AI is beneficial if used appropriately. AI is beneficial to help generate ideas so that these ideas can be expanded upon. AI also saves time. Let’s face it, AI is here to stay, so teachers need to help students use it to their benefit without using it to replace critical and analytical thinking.
” AI isn’t going anywhere out of the department of education anytime soon, so it is important to try to at least use it properly. There are a huge number of benefits to using it, like helping students understand lessons better or even helping teachers understand what students need. It is capable of enhancing the teacher’s ability to make learning more “exciting” or more relatable to students,” Hamby said.
However, great concerns have arisen about whether school is going to stay the same in the next 50 years. “I cannot imagine that a human will be teaching students fifty years from now, nor can I imagine that students will come to school and sit in desks like they do now.
I suspect that something other than a teacher will be providing information to students. In fact, I don’t believe that fifty years from now there will even be such a “thing” as traditional schools where students go to on a daily basis. With the expansion of technology, what we know as school will look vastly different, and I don’t know if that will be positive or negative, but we’ll have to wait and see. Scary!” (Hamby).
AI is a huge part of society, so it is hard to get rid of since it is our future, especially in education. AI has its benefits yet its negatives; moreover, it’s good to study and take the time to learn things rather than letting a robot do your own thinking!

I like how the article shows both the positives and negatives of AI, and how Ms. Hamby encourages students to use it as a tool without replacing real critical thinking.
