DEMONS SOFTBALL STANDS TALL

The scene is gorgeous. The sun is still setting, and the sky is decorated with pink and orange clouds. Fans anxiously await the first pitch as Greenway’s varsity softball team is set to take on another opponent.  This was the perspective of Greenway’s opening softball game this year, and here is how their season played out.

“Season is going well. We are undefeated in regular season and ranked 2nd in 4A. We are Skyline Region Champs and our goal is to win state. Salpointe Catholic has been the state champions for the past 3 years, and the Demons are ready to break their stride. ‘Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard’ is a quote that defines our team. We have gotten to where we are due to hard work, sweat and tears put in daily. It has been a grind, but the outcome will be worth it.  Junior Kaitlyn Terry has broken many Greenway records but the biggest record of all is to be ranked #1 in strikeouts nationally with over 369 strikeouts,” Head coach Janna Frandrup said.
Greenway softball has not won a state championship since 2008 when Coach Janna Frandrup led them on the mound with a win over Arcadia. Arcadia was ranked #1 and they were back-to-back state champions until Greenway shut them down 2-1. Greenway was ranked 6th that season and beat #3, #2, #1 to win it all.
Junior Grace Madril says that the games this year were always so hype!
During the last 16  regular season games the Demons outscored their opponents 257 to 2. The Demons went into the State Playoffs ranked second. They beat Buckeye and Sahurita, but sadly, our season came to an end during a hard fought battle against the Mingus Marauders. (5/10/22) The game was tied until the eighth inning when a solo home run was hit by the opposing team.
“Softball allows me to cherish the life lessons it has taught me and always be grateful. I GET to play the sport I love!” Senior Kayla Olivias said.
Freshman Taylor Borup says that she will never forget the memories she made on the team this year.
“I can’t wait for next season,” Sophomore Jenna Musselwhite said.
