At Greenway, coaches empower their team to be able to reach their full potential. They hold team strategies and sportsmanship together. What matters more is the bond the coach and the team create together. This is important to those coaches who are outside the school they coach at, their players want to feel valued as a person before an athlete. Now here are some coaches that work outside of Greenway but chose to come coach for our Greenway students.

Coach Beth..
To start, what sport are you coaching and how is/was your team doing.
“I coach the Cheerleading team and they had an incredible last season and we are looking forward to tryouts next week.
What brought you to coach at Greenway?
“I’ve always coached competitive cheer but I wanted a change and to try something new. Thankfully my boss knows Mr. Feldman and he informed her that Greenway had an opening for their head coach and asked if she knew anyone who would be interested. “
What do you enjoy most about teaching at Greenway and what do you find interesting?
“I love all of the support and camaraderie within the athletes and the staff here. I haven’t had any unpleasant interactions with anyone on staff and the athletes work really hard and showcase the utmost sportsmanship for each other and others. Greenway has truly fostered a great environment on campus.”
If you’ve coached at any other school is there a difference with Greenway?
“I’ve assisted other schools but I have never been a main coach on a team.”

Coach Tess..
To start, what sport are you coaching and how is/was your team doing.
“My “official” title is the head girls track and field coach, but I am mainly in charge of the female sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers. The team is doing very well so far; we have a good mix of veteran athletes and newcomers who have been able to hold their own against larger schools like Xavier and Sunnyslope. Our freshmen and sophomore ladies took second place in the frosh/soph district championships, scoring over 100 points and outscoring the third place team by 60 points.”

What brought you to coach at Greenway?
“What landed me at Greenway was my desire to give back to the community that shaped me. I am a Greenway alum, class of 2008, and a member of the girls’ track and field state championship team from that same year. The teachers and coaches at Greenway during my time as a student here instilled so much positivity, camaraderie, and love for education and athletics in my life, that I always had a desire to teach and/or coach at my alma mater, so when the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance.”
What do you enjoy most about teaching at Greenway and what do you find interesting?
“The thing I enjoy most about coaching at Greenway, other than the familiarity and nostalgia of it all, is the student athletes. They are the reason I do what I do! I cannot think of a single time this season where I could or would say, “That was a bad practice,” or, “Why do I bother?” I look forward to every practice and meet to see their progress and check in with each of them. My athletes make each day a little bit brighter.”

If you’ve coached at any other school is there a difference with Greenway?
“I coached at three other schools before coaching at Greenway. While I have enjoyed all of my positions, I would have to say that there is a difference in the level of athleticism, sportsmanship, and organization here. Our student athletes want to perform and be competitive in our division, as well as the AIA as a whole, and it shows when it comes time to practice. There is a friendly competition between teammates where they are able to push one another to their own personal best without causing rifts in friendships or the team’s culture. Greenway is unique in that way; its not something every school has, and it’s a place where I am honored to have been welcomed back. “

I loved hearing about how these coaches started and other schools they’ve coached at.

I like how you talked about the coaches who don’t get talked about much outside the team.

This does a great job showing the impact coaches have on their teams. The interviews add strong detail and make it feel genuine.
