What is FCCLA?
FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. It is a student organization that helps young people develop leadership skills and prepare for their future.
FCCLA is connected to classes like Family and Consumer Sciences, which teach skills for everyday life, careers, and relationships. Students in FCCLA take part in activities such as community service projects, competitions, and leadership events.
The goal of FCCLA is to help students become responsible leaders in their families, schools, and communities. Members learn skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving that they can use in real life.

So I asked elected state president Steven Scholl a couple of questions about his experiences with FCCLA.

What is FCCLA, and why did you choose to be involved in it?
– “FCCLA, or Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, is a national student-led organization that focuses on leadership development, community service, and career preparation, especially in areas related to family and consumer sciences. It provides students with opportunities to build real-world skills through conferences, competitive events, and leadership roles that go beyond the classroom. FCCLA helps students gain confidence, develop responsibility, and prepare for both college and future careers by giving them hands-on experiences and the chance to lead.
I chose to be involved in FCCLA because it is part of the Advanced Hospitality elective, which aligns directly with my interests and future goals. Honestly, I might not have joined if it weren’t for Mr. Dudo, my hospitality teacher and FCCLA Advisor, who really pushed and encouraged me to take Advanced Hospitality and get involved in FCCLA. At the time, I didn’t fully realize how much it would impact me, but looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. His encouragement helped me step out of my comfort zone and try something new, and that decision opened so many doors for me.
Being in FCCLA allows me to apply what I learn in class to real experiences, especially through conferences and leadership opportunities. It has helped me grow as a leader, improve my communication skills, and build confidence in myself. More importantly, it has given me the chance to make a positive impact in my school and community while preparing me for my future in the hospitality field.”

What does your role in FCCLA mean?
-“My role as State President in Arizona FCCLA means that I represent members across the entire state while helping lead and inspire others. It’s more than just a title; it’s about being a role model, communicating effectively, and making sure students feel encouraged, included, and motivated to get involved and grow as leaders. I strive to set a positive example through my actions and attitude, while helping create an environment where members feel supported and confident enough to take on new challenges and leadership roles.
As State President, I help lead conferences, speak in front of large groups, and work with other state officers to plan and support FCCLA initiatives. I also help share ideas, represent student voices, and promote all the opportunities FCCLA provides to members across Arizona. This role means a lot to me because it reflects my dedication and personal growth, and it has helped me become more confident, responsible, and prepared for the future. It also allows me to represent Arizona FCCLA while continuing to build strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills through my experience in Advanced Hospitality.”

What’s one thing you would tell people to join FCCLA for?
-“One thing I would tell people to join Family, Career and Community Leaders of America for is the opportunity to grow into a leader while gaining real-world experience. FCCLA isn’t just another club—it gives you the chance to step outside your comfort zone, meet new people, and build skills that actually matter for your future. Whether it’s through conferences, speaking opportunities, or working as part of a team, you learn confidence, responsibility, and how to lead in real situations.
Another big reason to join is the travel opportunities. Through FCCLA, you can attend State Conference, which for Arizona is held in Tucson, giving you the chance to travel, compete, and connect with members from across the state. Even more exciting, if you qualify, you can attend the National Leadership Conference, which is held in a different location every year. This summer, it’s in Washington, D.C., which is an incredible opportunity to travel, explore a new city, and represent your state on a national level. Experiences like these make FCCLA so much more than just a school activity; they turn it into something unforgettable. Overall, FCCLA is worth joining because it opens doors you might not expect. It helps you grow not just as a student, but as a person, while giving you opportunities to travel, lead, and be part of something bigger than yourself.”
