Softball Truly Has It All

Strike three says the umpire as Junior Kaitlyn Terry adds another “K” to the scorecard. The stands are filled and going crazy as the Demons start racking up some runs on the board. Hype can’t even explain the energy. This is the perspective of any softball game at Greenway this season.

So far, the Demons are undefeated in regular season play. They have outscored their last six opponents by a score of 221 to 1 behind superstar Terry who leads the nation in both hitting home runs (13) and striking out batters.

 

 

 

 

 

In a recent game, Greenway won 8-0 over Flagstaff, Kaitlyn Terry was brilliant in the circle as she threw a no-hitter. The Demons got things started in the first inning when Terry homered on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs. Greenway scored four runs in the seventh inning. The offensive firepower by Greenway was led by Terry and Ariel Chandler, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Terry got the win for Greenway. The pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out 18. The Greenway Demons smacked three home runs on the day. Terry had a homer in the first and seventh innings. Chandler also had a long ball in the seventh inning. The Demons saw the ball well, racking up ten hits in the game. Kayla Olivas, Terry, Demi De Herrera, and Chandler all managed multiple hits for Greenway. Olivas led Greenway Demons with three hits in four at bats. Greenway Demons was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“We have all been putting in the work and it is really paying off,” Junior Kaila Hooper said.

On 3/21, the Greenway varsity softball team won their home conference game against Tempe (AZ) by a score of 18-8.

On 3/12, the Greenway varsity softball team won their away tournament game against Deer Valley (Glendale, AZ)by a score of 8-0.

On 3/11, the Greenway varsity softball team won their home tournament game against Aztec (NM) by a score of 7-2.

On 3/12, the Greenway varsity softball team won their home tournament game against Bloomfield (NM) by a score of 9-2.

On 3/10, the Greenway varsity softball team lost their neutral tournament game against Corona del Sol (Tempe, AZ) by a score of 3-2.

On 3/8, the Greenway varsity softball team won their home non-conference game against Sunnyslope (Phoenix, AZ) by a score of 1-0.

On 3/3, the Greenway varsity softball team won their home non-conference game against Coconino (Flagstaff, AZ)by a score of 3-2.

“The season is going strong. We have beat 5A and 6A teams, working through some adversity and playing together as one,” Head coach Janna Frandrup said. (3/1/22)
Sophomore Jenna Musselwhite says that her favorite thing about being on Greenway’s softball team is how much of a family they all are together.
It came down to the wire in one of their early games, with Greenway taking the victory on a dramatic walk-off in the late innings that sealed their victory over Coconino. (3/3/22)
The game was tied at two with Greenway batting in the bottom of the eighth when Amberleigh Castillo laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run. Kaitlyn Terry struck out 24. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Greenway tied things up at two when Kaitlyn Bennett doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. Terry earned the victory on the rubber for the Demons. The lefthander allowed one hit and two runs over eight innings, striking out 24 and walking one.
Terry had a dinger in the fourth inning. Greenway s totaled eight hits in the game. Jenna Musslewhite and Bennett each had multiple hits for Greenway. Musslewhite led Greenway Demons with three hits in four at bats. Greenway Demons were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Kayla Olivas had the most chances in the field with 21.
Junior Grace Madril says that she can’t wait to see what the season has in store for them.
“It’s going to be fun,” Freshman Taylor Borup said.
