The World Baseball Classic is a unique and exciting event that brings together the best players from around the world to compete on a global stage. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual observer, the World Baseball Classic is a must-see event that showcases the very best of this beloved sport. It has even made its mark on staff and students here at Greenway.

“The WBC is entertaining because it is not played every year, which makes the players more competitive since it may be their only opportunity to play in it. Normally, I root for the underdogs, so I was hoping Costa Rica or Venezuela would qualify. Since those two teams unfortunately failed to make it to the WBC, I am rooting for the USA, but I think Japan will win a close championship game,” AP US History and government teacher Mr. Jarrell said.

“I was hoping to see the Dominican Republic win! Being a Padres fan, I wanted to see guys like Machado, Soto, and Cruz do well. Plus, the US wins a lot of things. It would be good for the sport to see other countries dominate. So many MLB players playing for the US and other countries! That’s such a cool thing to see. It’s exciting to see players who may be on the same MLB team, or in the same division, facing off against each other as nations. It’s also a good chance to see and learn about non-MLB players playing along side MLB guys on their country’s team,” Math teacher Mr. Mrozinski said.

“I think the World Baseball Classic is an international baseball tournament sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). The tournament is held every four years, and the most recent tournament was held in 2017. Japan has won the tournament twice, while the Dominican Republic and the United States have each won once. The tournament is a major event for baseball fans around the world and showcases some of the best players in the sport,” Senior Brisney Ibarra said.

The World Baseball Classic is more than just a tournament; it’s a celebration of the sport’s global impact and a testament to the passion and skill of its players. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual observer, the tournament offers a unique opportunity to see the best players from around the world compete on the same stage. With each iteration of the World Baseball Classic, we’re reminded of the power of sports to bring people together, to transcend borders and cultures, and to inspire us with the joy of the game.
